Brief Commentary on Genesis 44

by Matt Carter
In Genesis 44 I notice that in verse 16 Judah finally concludes that God has exposed their guilt. In the midst of their fear and vulnerability, God exposed their guilt. Judah now sees this. He also sees how his own sin will wound those he loves. In verse 34, Judah says he cannot bear to see his own evil find his father Jacob. Judah's confession, or recognizing sin, leads him to repentance, which is turning away from sin. And so Judah is broken. Unlike the Judah of chapter 37, this Judah offers himself up as a sacrificial substitute for his young brother.
