Brief Commentary on Genesis 34

by Matt Carter
In the sad story of Dinah in Genesis 34, I notice the wicked combination of idolatry, which is making false gods, and injustice, which is playing at being a false god. Idol making takes the good of human creativity and applies that as a fix for human vulnerability. As immigrants in a foreign land, Jacob and his family are, as this story shows, very vulnerable. False gods lead to terrible tragedy. A child is raped and the town where he just erected an altar to the LORD is demolished. In some ways, Jacob's family has outdone the locals in wickedness.
